Tilley Updates: September 2024

Since our last update, Tilley has generated 229,939 kWh – that’s enough power to boil a 3kW kettle for nearly nine years!

Generated in September

229,939 kWh

Most Productive Day

10th of September – 14,493 kWh

Windiest Day

10th of September – 33.55mph

Tilley measured the biggest gust of wind as 60.84mph on both the 11th and 14th of September.

Update on Tilley’s Repair Status

We’ve previously mentioned that Tilley is currently operating at 60% capacity while we await a choke repair and for her generator coils to be rewound. Unfortunately, we still do not have a specific date for these repairs, and we anticipate they will not be completed until after winter due to the hazardous conditions that winter weather brings, making wind turbine repairs unsafe.

What is a choke? What is a generator coil?

In a wind turbine, a choke regulates the electrical current, filtering out fluctuations and ensuring a stable power output that is compatible with the grid. This is essential for improving efficiency and protecting the turbine’s components from damage.

A generator coil is a key component of a turbine’s generator, which converts mechanical energy from the rotor (the blades) into electrical energy.

Repairing both of these components is a complex process that requires a specialised multi-person team. These specialists are in high demand, which is contributing to the delay in the repair.

What happens next?

We are now waiting for ENERCON to send over their specialist team as soon as possible. The good news is that Tilley continues to generate steadily at 60%. Preparations have already been undertaken for the choke repair, so the specialist team can start work as quickly as possible once they arrive.

Got a question? Send it through to admin@tireetrust.org.uk and we’ll get in touch with an answer.
