Can you help us harvest Marram grass?

Hello from Tiree’s new Community Climate Action group!

The group has grown out of the Trust’s work with Science Ceilidh over the past year – part of the Highlands and Islands Community Climate Change Network.

“We hope to engage with the local community and visitors on how climate change might affect Tiree, as well as explore what nature based adaptation solutions could help.

One of our first ventures has been to harvest Marram seed – this is something we would like to invite you all to help with! Now is the perfect time to collect it and stored correctly, we will be able to use these seeds in the spring to replant Marram grass in areas of the island that might be eroded by storms over the winter.”

“Marram grass” is often referred to as feur na mòintich in Gaelic.

This video explains everything you need to know – made by Sapphire Arkless (a Community Climate Action group member!)

We hope you’ll help us get collecting out on your walks around the island!

p.s. if you would like to join the group – just get in touch!
