Tiree welcomes campers with cars, campervans, motorhomes and touring caravans. We hope you enjoy your stay.
Campers who are walking, cycling or kayaking are free to wild camp responsibly around the island under the Scottish Outdoor Access Code.
However, because of the fragile nature of Tiree’s machair, the grass and dune systems around the coast, we are unable to cater for informal camping from motorised vehicles, including motorcycles, cars, vans, campervans, motorhomes or touring caravans.
To support visitors who want to camp beside their vehicle, Tiree has introduced a network of Croft Sites across the island. Balinoe Campsite also operates as a separate private campsite.
Please read the information below before travelling so you know how to book a croft site or contact Balinoe Campsite.
Camping in Tiree
Responsible wild camping is free in Tiree for walkers, cyclists and kayakers under the Scottish Outdoor Access Code.
Please:
- Keep groups small
- Stay no more than three nights in one place
- Be discreet
- Keep dogs under close control, ideally in a lead
As much of the land is crofted, livestock may be grazing nearby.
Booking a Croft Site
To book a croft site, contact Tiree Community Development Trust by phone or email.
Each site is shown on the map and has a short description. All are close to beaches.
- Cost: £15 per pitch per night
- Maximum: 3 pitches per site
All croft site fees go directly to the site owners. This supports the traditional crofting way of life in Tiree.
Why You Must Use a Booked Site
Tiree’s landscape is beautiful but fragile. Unregulated vehicle use damages land quickly.
The island is home to many species of wading and farmland birds. Many nest on the ground, and their eggs and chicks are easily harmed by vehicles.
By using croft sites, Balinoe Campsite and marked parking areas, you help protect Tiree’s environment and wildlife for future generations.
You can also support this work by buying a window sticker. All funds go back into environmental improvements.
Please ensure you have booked somewhere to stay overnight before arriving in Tiree.

Balinoe Campsite
Balinoe Campsite is a separate, privately run campsite.
Tents, caravans and towed caravans are welcome. Facilities include:
- Indoor eating and kitchen area
- Hot showers
- Wash hand basin and toilet facilities
- Fresh running water from external taps

Elevated site at the west end of Crossapol Bay with great views to the Treshnish Isles.

Vaul
Flat site overlooking Vaul Beach.
Quiet spot, ideal for the broch and watching seals in the bay.

Flat site with good access for all sizes of van.
Quiet location, excellent for watching seals and otters.

- Grey water can be drained into the roadside gulley outside the toilets
- Black water must be emptied at the chemical waste disposal point in the fenced area to the right of the toilets
- Drinking water is available from the outside tap at the front of the toilet block
Information for Those Using Croft Sites
Please follow these simple rules to keep sites in good condition for everyone.
Fires and barbecues
Do not light fires or barbecues on grass or dunes.
Use sheltered beaches instead and keep fires on sand.
Remove all traces, including nails from driftwood, which are dangerous to children and livestock.
Rubbish
Leave your pitch clean and tidy.
All rubbish can be taken to the Gott Bay Recycling Centre.
Waste water
- Grey water to the gulley outside Scarinish toilets
- Black water only to the chemical waste disposal point
- Do not block the chute or put wipes or nappies in it
- Rinse after use
- Only use green, eco-friendly fluids
Water
Drinking water is available from the outside tap at Scarinish toilets.
Gates
Leave all gates as you find them.
Dogs
Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a short lead and away from livestock and other campers.
Exercise dogs away from the site.
Pick up dog waste and bin it, do not throw it over fences.
Failure to do this may result in being asked to leave.
Livestock and machinery
Livestock and farm machinery may be nearby.
Children must be supervised at all times.
Noise
Respect other users.
Quiet time is from 11pm to 7am.
Tents
Tents may be erected beside vehicles, check with Tiree Community Development Trust first.
Liability
Site owners accept no responsibility for loss or damage to people or property arising from use of a croft site.
