On Wednesday 8th July the chancellor, Rishi Sunak, has offered firms a £1,000 bonus for every furloughed employee they keep on until the end of January, and pay at least £520 a month.
The government’s furlough scheme will close in October. The scheme has been paying up to 80% of the wages of nine million people who can’t work because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Furloughed employees can now go back to work part-time, and from August, employers will have to pay National Insurance and pension contributions for their staff.
In September, they will have to pay 10% of their furloughed employees’ salaries – rising to 20% in October.
