ST PATRICK’S CHAPEL – TEAMPALL PH\u00c0RAIG<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

THE REMAINS OF A MEDIEVAL CHAPEL ON THE SITE OF A 6TH-CENTURY MONASTERY<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The small ruins of\u202fSt Patrick\u2019s Chapel\u202fare set in an ancient enclosure. Its\u202fdramatic coastal setting\u202foverlooks Balephuil Bay (Tr\u00e0igh Bhi) and has long made the site a place of reflection, folklore and local memory. The chapel stands at\u202fthe foot of Kenavara (Ceann a\u2019 Mhara), a headland on the west side of\u202fthe Bay. The site likely originated as an\u202fearly Christian monastic settlement dating from around the\u202f7th\u20138th century AD, in the period of early Celtic Christianity influenced by Iona.  The nearby Uamh Chaluim Ch\u00e8aird (cave of Calum the tinker) is thought to be a late Neolithic or Bronze Age burial chamber \u2026 or is it just a natural perched rock? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Walking Distance:<\/strong>\u202f~4km (out-and-back) \u2013 1.5 hours. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Terrain:<\/strong>\u202fMostly flat tracks, beach sand and grassland \u2014 be prepared for some soft ground near the shore and mud towards the chapel. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
