Isle of Tiree Community turbine gets planning approval. Despite an earlier recommendation from the Argyll & Bute Council planning department to refuse permission for a single community owned wind turbine on Tiree. At a public hearing, held on the island on the evening of March 6th,, attended by a third of the island’s community. The council’s Oban, Lorn and the Isles area committee, chaired by Councillor Duncan McIntyre, unanimously voted to grant planning permission for the proposed turbine, after hearing the arguments of the Tiree Community Development Trust, as well as those opposing the development.
The turbine will generate revenues for the island’s community, and according to Tish MacKinnon, the Trust’s chairperson, “ this marks the start of a process that will given island residents the opportunity to shape Tiree’s future through the development of the Trust.” |
