Tilley the Tiree Turbine
Friday, 26 February 2010
Following an open competition to find a name for Tiree’s turbine, the Board of the Trust decided that he/she/it will be called Tilley, after the tilley lamp, which was a source of light in the past, and our turbine should be a source of light for the future. The competition entries came from young and old, but were judged completely impartially and anonymously. There were many good ideas for names, involving several languages, and including commemorating real people from the past, so it was a difficult choice.  The winning idea came from Fiona MacKinnon – well done Fiona. Now, would anyone like to write and illustrate a children’s book about Tilley the Tiree Turbine?

Tiree Community Wind Turbine Update February 2010
Friday, 19 February 2010
What’s  happening ?
The TREL and Trust directors met with Stewart Clark and Bill Weston of Argyll and Bute Council last week to discuss road damage between Scarinish Pier and the turbine site, and the state of Tiree roads in general.  The overall impression of the roads under the surface gravel between Scarinish and the Turbine site was not too bad, and repairs will be carried out later in the year.  Meanwhile reinstatement of verges etc has started and should be finished by the end of the month.  We hope that the contractors will start on tidying up and reinstating the site area around the turbine very soon.

First Aid Course February 2010
Friday, 12 February 2010
On Thursday 11th of February a Basic First Aid course was held in An Talla. It was for volunteers from community groups. The Course and lunch was funded by the Volunteer centre in Oban and coordinated by the Tiree Trust. Eight volunteers from the community attended. The day was a success and I think everyone learnt a lot!
Murdina also provided some of the Youth club leaders with a short evening course which was enjoyed by all.

Thank you to Murdina from the Red Cross for coming out here and the Volunteer centre for paying for the training and to everyone who came along and took part!

Tiree Community Turbine Update Dec 2009
Thursday, 10 December 2009

The turbine is up and now all that remains is for the electrical connections and testing to be completed. This requires the co-ordination of several teams of people – the turbine manufacturers, the national grid, the Hydro and local contractors. Nevertheless, TREL and the Trust are still hopeful that the turbine will be commissioned before the end of the year.

Name your Turbine!

Now that you have had a couple of weeks to get used to seeing your turbine up at Ruaig Sliabh, could you think about a name for him, her, it? Anyone can enter an idea for a name, in Gaelic, English, Scots or any other appropriate language (please provide a translation if not in English); submit your ideas in writing to the Trust office at An Talla by 31st December. Include your own name so you can take part in the official opening ceremony, which will probably be in February. The Trust Board will pick the best name. Please – nothing rude!

A new landmark on Tiree
Sunday, 15 November 2009
A new landmark is taking shape on the island.  The £2 million pound community project to build a large wind turbine has entered the final stages with arrival on island of 7 lorry loads of parts and two gigantic cranes, transported by Mar-Train heavy haulage based in Ireland and Scotland. A specially chartered sailing of Caledonian MacBrayne's ferry, the MV Clansman, arrived at Scarinish pier at 10.45pm on Saturday 7th November and it took over 2 hours to unload all the lorries/ cranes and components. By Thursday 12th the first two sections of the turbine, each measuring over 15 meters, had been erected by the team from Enercon/ Whytes Cranes with assistance from  Mar Train employees.
