What’s happening ? The TREL and Trust directors met with Stewart Clark and Bill Weston of Argyll and Bute Council last week to discuss road damage between Scarinish Pier and the turbine site, and the state of Tiree roads in general. The overall impression of the roads under the surface gravel between Scarinish and the Turbine site was not too bad, and repairs will be carried out later in the year. Meanwhile reinstatement of verges etc has started and should be finished by the end of the month. We hope that the contractors will start on tidying up and reinstating the site area around the turbine very soon.
The final connection by Scottish and Southern has been delayed because of problems they have experienced with the "Statcom", the voltage regulator which has to be installed at the generating station on the island. A similar model on Orkney has had to be modified and SSE have to complete this work on our machine before they can "energise" our site. They have promised us that they will complete this work by the end of February. Enercon, the turbine manufacturer, cannot finally commission the Turbine until SSE have finished all their work. The final commissioning should be straightforward and can be done with a week’s notice. We will then be able to export our electricity to the Grid and start earning money for the Community on Tiree. Although there have been delays because of the connection issues, the Co-Op bank continues to be fully supportive. The projected income for the community is still in line with our original estimates. A project on Benbecula with the same model of turbine as ours has the second best output in Europe for this type of turbine. We will let you know when we have news about the connection.
