2010-03-01

Welcome to the new Youth section of the Tiree Trust web site! I have been working here at the Trust as the Youth worker since last November. I work with several groups in the comunity and with the School.

Here's an update of what has been going on with each group -

Mothers and toddlers -  I help out leaders Kate and Jane out at this fortnightly group by helping with teas and entertaining the older toddlers so the mothers can have a catch up.

Mainly Music -  This is another fortnightly group which meets in An Talla. I’ve become more involved at ‘mainly music’ as Ishbel prepares to go on maternity leave - she will be missed!   I am now helping Becky by working the computer slides and the music.

Youth Club -  Youth Club meets every Monday and Wednesday in An Talla. I help out by with setting up and organising games or activities for the young people most nights. We are also running our anual competitions at the moment! There are plans for an Easter Fundraiser so keep your eyes peeled!!

We also recently were awarded funding from HIF - This was to purchase a Wii Fit and various other Wii games and materials to be shared between the Youth club, the Youth Cafe and the Lunch club!!

Youth Café (Ch@ room) - Youth café has been up and running since the end of December. We now have a strong team of leaders including Craig Smith, Caroline Graham, Andrew Findlater, Helen Thompson and Myself. The numbers are steadily increasing, we now have around 15 young people attending each week. There is a bus service which takes the young people home at the end of each seesion and is used by almost everyone! Thanks Aj!

We received a very generous donation of £100 from Mr Ian MacAurthur, Balephuil. This will help us to keep the bus service running and has allowed us to order some new materials! We also received a donation of a Tv for our Wii from Tony McEwen! Thank you very much - all help is appreciated!

The Young people are planning a fundraiser during the Easter break so watch this space! :-)

School -  I have been going into the school four times a week and doing different lunchtime activities. Activities include quizs, competitions, games, arts and crafts and a music session on a Friday. Numbers have been creeping up slowly.

Duke of Edinburgh We had our first Duke of Edinburgh leaders meeting. We have 7 leaders and me. We are just going through the processes of setting up the group and hopefully will be up and running soon! The group is very enthusiastic and I hope this will be a successful project.

Young Farmers –  We had our Launch meeting, which I set up to gage interest. I didn’t want to go ahead with the group if there were not enough people wanting it to happen. 20 young farmers showed up and a further 4 said they would like to be involved but could not make the meeting. We then put together a provisional committee, 14 people wanted to go onto the committee. They all seemed very keen and we have now sent away an application for our club.

New Cinema –  I attended a TRD meeting last week, where I discussed the need for the youth to be involved in the cinema project. They were keen for this to happen and we are arranging an initial meeting for the cinema club steering group. Two of the girls from youth café are very willing to join and I will go to the first meeting with them.

If you have any suggestions or questions - or would like to be involved with any of the projects above, don't hesistate to get in touch with me at the Trust Smile
