Tiree’s community turbine has been officially opened! PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 05 May 2010

At an event on April 24th attended by over 100 islanders and representatives of those organisations that have assisted in the project, including Community Energy Scotland (CES), The Coop Bank, TC Young and the Argyll Estates. Tiree’s 900KW Enercon E44 turbine “Tilley” was officially handed over by the chair of Tiree Renewable Energy Limited, Bruce Kemp to Tish MacKinnon, chair of the Tiree Community Development Trust.

The official opening was followed by a well attended family dance at the island’s community hall An Talla, where Enercon’s engineers from Germany and the bankers from the Coop in Manchester were introduced to the challenges of ceilidh dancing on Tiree.

The turbine is now operating smoothly and in April, despite some disruption from the commissioning process, met its anticipated performance target.

Tilley the Tiree Community Turbine Now Turning PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 28 March 2010

Tiree Renewable Energy Company Limited (TREL) is pleased to announce that after being put through a number of energising and commissioning tests Tilley the Tiree Turbine was generating by late afternoon on Saturday 27th March.

The project to build a Turbine for the community of Tiree started over 4 years ago. The voluntary directors of TREL have worked tirelessly, and overcome many hurdles during this time to reach this day.

The turbine is now operational and will start to generate an income stream which will benefit the community of Tiree for the next 25 years. This income will be gift aided by TREL to Tiree Community Development Trust and used to support a variety of future community projects. Details regarding The Tiree Windfall fund will be distributed to the community soon.

Please note there will be an official opening ceremony on Saturday 24th April at 2pm, followed by a family dance in the evening, which will be open to all in the community. (More details will follow later, watch out for notices)

Congratulations to all who have helped in any way to make this project a success.

Tilley the Tiree Turbine PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 26 February 2010
Following an open competition to find a name for Tiree’s turbine, the Board of the Trust decided that he/she/it will be called Tilley, after the tilley lamp, which was a source of light in the past, and our turbine should be a source of light for the future. The competition entries came from young and old, but were judged completely impartially and anonymously. There were many good ideas for names, involving several languages, and including commemorating real people from the past, so it was a difficult choice.  The winning idea came from Fiona MacKinnon – well done Fiona. Now, would anyone like to write and illustrate a children’s book about Tilley the Tiree Turbine?

What’s  happening ?
The TREL and Trust directors met with Stewart Clark and Bill Weston of Argyll and Bute Council last week to discuss road damage between Scarinish Pier and the turbine site, and the state of Tiree roads in general.  The overall impression of the roads under the surface gravel between Scarinish and the Turbine site was not too bad, and repairs will be carried out later in the year.  Meanwhile reinstatement of verges etc has started and should be finished by the end of the month.  We hope that the contractors will start on tidying up and reinstating the site area around the turbine very soon.

First Aid Course February 2010 PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 12 February 2010
On Thursday 11th of February a Basic First Aid course was held in An Talla. It was for volunteers from community groups. The Course and lunch was funded by the Volunteer centre in Oban and coordinated by the Tiree Trust. Eight volunteers from the community attended. The day was a success and I think everyone learnt a lot!
Murdina also provided some of the Youth club leaders with a short evening course which was enjoyed by all.

Thank you to Murdina from the Red Cross for coming out here and the Volunteer centre for paying for the training and to everyone who came along and took part!
