Legal Structure

Tiree Community Development Trust is a Company Limited by Guarantee (Company No. SC 292902) and a registered charity (Scottish Charity No. SC 037018). We also operate as Parent of a Company Group containing four subsidiary trading companies wholly owned by us.

Directors

All of our elected Board directors must be residents of Tiree and this ensures the we are led with the community interests at the heart of everything we do. We can choose to co-opt Directors who are not resident, but who have skills and expertise that we feel are important.

Our current board are:

Fiona Malcolm (Chair)
Fiona is a busy nana to 10 grandchildren all living in Tiree. She works in Tigh a Rudha as a carer and a cook and also runs an ironing and laundry business. She is involved in many local committees and loves the island way of life.

John Bowler (Vice Chair)
John has worked as the Island Officer for RSPB on Tiree since 2001 and lives at Balephuil with his wife Janet. He was one of the original Directors of TCDT in 2006 and is also a Director of TREL and TRD Ltd.

Martin Finnigan
Martin has served as a director of the Trust and/or TREL for over eight years. He has deep personal ties to Tiree through his wife, whose family connections in the island span six generations. Professionally, Martin holds qualifications in Electrical Engineering and Finance. He has over 30 years of experience developing projects that address social injustice and strengthen communities in challenging places around the world.

Christine Coghill
Christine moved home to Tiree in 2021 after spending 9 years on the mainland studying and working as a Gaelic/Maths teacher. She is wife to Philip, mum to 3 girls and a part-time crofter.

Matthew McDowall
Matthew serves as a Director for the Tiree Trust and also sits on the board for CIT. Outside of Tiree he is involved with the Young Islanders Network, which aims to give young people on Islands a voice to be heard by decision makers.

Ronnie Baird
Ronnie has recently become a Tiree resident, having been a regular visitor to the Island with family since he was a young child. He spent his career in housing and land promotion/ development,  in which he is still active on the mainland, and has joined the Board to try to help develop affordable housing for Tiree residents.

Assets and Subsiduaries

Currently we own 8 community assets including; a wind turbine, 2 harbours, a shop, an electric minibus, an art installation, 4 business units and a filling station.

We have 4 wholly owned subsiduaries.

Our Approach

One of the key learning points over the early years of our development has been the importance of communication.  Communication is vital to the Trust achieving its vision and for the Tiree community and we take our responsibility for this very seriously . It would be very useful if we could have some constructive feedback on what is working and what you feel we need to improve.  So please support, guide and help us to build a solid foundation for Tiree to embrace the changes, opportunities and developments it faces.

Our Terms of Engagement are

  • To be inclusive for the whole Community
  • We will endeavour to acknowledge your communication within 3 working days.
  • Our key communication channels are regular updates in An Tirisdeach, public meetings in Tiree, our office and our website.

We welcome your questions and constructive feedback but please respect that we are a small, very busy team. Communication is a two way process and we aim for an inclusive approach to enable us to inform the community on Tiree. In all of our communications we will endeavour to be

and we feel that it is reasonable to expect the same of those corresponding with us.
